When we cut wood with a saw, we usually find something.
私たちがのこぎりで木を切るとき、ふつう何かを見つける。
It is called sawdust.
それはおがくずと呼ばれる。
Most of us think of it as waste.
私たちのほとんどはそれをゴミと考える。
But some children use it as a bed for beetles.
しかし、それをカブトムシの寝床として使う子供たちもいる。
This is not the only way to use sawdust.
これはおがくずを使う唯一の方法ではない。
About 1,500 years ago, people didn’t have any machines to keep ice.
約１，５００年前、人々は氷を保存する機械が全くなかった。
But they could use and eat it in summer.
しかし、彼らは夏に氷を使ったり食べたりすることが出来た。
How did they do that?
彼らはどのようにしてそれをしたのか。
In Japan, people carried ice from a pond to a special house in winter.
日本では、人々は冬に氷を池から特別な建物へ運んだ。
In this house, people put a lot of sawdust on the ice to keep it until summer.
この建物で、人々は夏まで氷を保存するために氷にたくさんのおがくずをかぶせる。
Sawdust is very useful because it can keep the low temperature.
おがくずは低い温度を保つことが出来るので、とても役に立つ。
So the ice doesn’t become water.
だから氷は水にならない。
Some people in Nikko still keep ice in this way.
日光には、まだこの方法でそれを保存する人々がいる。
Sawdust is also used in another way.
おがくずはまた、別の方法で使われている。
We can use sawdust for a toilet.
私たちはトイレにおがくずを使うことが出来る。
We usually use water to clean it.
私たちはふつう、トイレをきれいにするために水を使う。
But, in some places it is difficult to do so.
しかしある場所では、そのようにするのは難しい。
If the toilet is not clean, we will get sick easily.
もしトイレが清潔でなければ、私たちは容易に病気になる。
It is a problem.
それは問題である。
So we need this special toilet which doesn’t use water.
だから私たちは、水を使わないこの特別なトイレが必要だ。
If we put sawdust in a toilet and exchange it only a few times a year, we can use a clear toilet all the time and live a healthy life.
もし私たちがトイレにおがくずをおいて１年に数回だけ換えれば、いつも清潔なトイレを使うことが出来て、健康的な生活を送ることが出来る。
Sawdust is never waste.
おがくずは決してゴミではない。
It really helps us.
それは本当に私たちを助けてくれる。
Something which looks like waste now will be something useful in the future.
今ゴミのように見えるものは、将来役に立つものになる。
What will come after sawdust?
おがくずの後に来るのは何だろうか。
It will make our life richer.
それは私たちの生活をより豊かにするだろう。
